In the beginning of August, we will embark on the 163rd year of Cathedral School. The excitement of the beginning of a new school year, the welcoming of a new senior class and new students to Cathedral, as well as all our returning students, is always a thrill. First, however, let’s reminisce about this past school year and all the successes that were accomplished.
The senior class of 2008 were leaders in academics, athletics, community service and spiritual endeavors. The total amount of scholarships received was approximately $2.8 million dollars. Their ACT scores are expected to be an all-time high for Cathedral School as a class, around a 23 composite. (We are awaiting the official report from the American College Testing Service.) Cathedral’s Key Club was chosen as the Most Outstanding Key Club in the Louisiana-Mississippi-Tennessee District. Our sports program was awarded 4th place overall in 1A sports for the State of Mississippi by the Jackson Clarion Ledger.
During this past year, under the chairmanships of Mary Ann Calhoun Carter ’76, and Benny Jeansonne, our alumni, parents, grandparents and friends donated a grand total of $128,000 towards the Annual Giving Campaign. This amount is outstanding! Our new chairmen, Caroline Ferguson McDonough ’85, and Biff Partridge ’79 have already begun planning and gathering together their cabinet members in order to help surpass last year’s amount. Many, many thanks go to all of our chairmen that do so much in bringing in money that supports OUR Cathedral School. This school could not exist without these people.
During the month of June 2007, Cathedral School hosted a one-day retreat in which a Strategic Plan was written for our school. Information that had been gathered prior to the retreat was discussed and thoroughly evaluated. This Strategic Plan can now be viewed on our website www.cathedralgreenwave.com. During this upcoming school year, the School Advisory Council and five committees will be taking this Strategic Plan and endeavoring to put many of the goals and objectives into place. We will continue to keep you informed on our plan’s progress through the Wave Length.
During the months of June and July, and with the help from all those that financially support the school, we were able to complete some structure work and painting on Seton Hall. All the outside windows in the elementary were painted, and several offices have been carpeted. In the high school and middle school, all light fixtures have been replaced with fixtures that are more energy-efficient. Throughout the entire school and gym, all outside doors are in the process of being replaced for both safety reasons and for cosmetics.
Truly wonderful things are happening here at Cathedral. We encourage all classes to consider a reunion during either our Fall Festival or Homecoming weekends. Ms. Stephanie Matheney, Development Director, will be most happy to assist any and all classes in getting their plans together. Please consider this your “personal” invitation to come by your school when you are in town and give us the opportunity of showing you around Cathedral’s wonderful campus! Our students and staff always pray for our benefactors and alumni at all our school masses, and we will continue to do so as we are thankful for each and every one of you. You are not forgotten! May God Bless and keep each one of you in the palm of His hands.
